The year is 1848. Across all the world the Industrial Revolution is in full swing, and in its birthplace of Great Scourge1 a rich class of capitalists has developed. The old regime - the nobles - had one choice: become capitalists, or become vestigial. Many chose the former. Those who chose the former are now in control, for not three decades ago the Archalia was no more, being replaced with the High Regarchy. The first Regarch, Lord Berthold von Hompkoft, died five years ago. Under him the High Regarchy was established as a compromise to the nobility - the last Arch had wished for the Senate and Lord High Chancellor to rule, with the Lord High Chancellor a post elected by the rich, but the nobility, fearful of the capitalist class that might soon become rich enough to vote, quickly put the idea down and a regency council was established, ostensibly to find a proper heir for the Archalia but in reality to rule and placate the desires of the nobility. Berthold's heir, the significantly less benevolent Lord Reinhold von Homptkoft, is ruler now. Reinhold has seen exponential GDP growth in Great Scourge due to his laissez-faire policies. But not all is good. The Industrial Revolution is possible largely due to the Scourgian colonial empire, where the natural resources of foreign lands are stripped bare. Though slavery was abolished 50 years earlier, the factory workers are hardly better off. Paid barely enough to buy a loaf of bread each week, working 18 hours a day, without safety requirements, many have also turned to making their children work. Worse they never earn even a paltry sample of what they produce in most cases. It is in this environment that the workers have begun organizing, forming unions, going on strikes. Yet even these are put down, and brutally, for the state has done away with the elected constables and replaced them with a professional police force2. These police are often corrupt and trigger happy, putting down strikes and smashing unions with bullets, while often knowingly look the other way as big crime syndicates further ruin the lot of the poor. Some have had enough of this, and an idea socialism has spread like wildfire. However it has never been truly organized. Until now. Two Scourgian philosophers, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, have written a book called the Communist Manifesto and organized the Scourgian Communist Party. In the manifesto and their other works, they detail their theories about class, class struggle and warfare, what capitalism is, history, as well as socialism and how to achieve it. They call for a violent revolution, throwing down the old establishment in blood and fire, and establishing a new one under the dictatorship of the proletariat, with the ultimate goal of transition to capitalism. Understandably, the bourgeoisie and nobles are trembling. 1Yes, Great Scourge REALLY is a combination of Germany and the UK 2Like in real life, the reason for the creation of the police was to suppress the poor. Below summarize the state of your nation, the status of the industrial revolution there, and how they have reacted to socialism. You can also make characters who are Scourgian and members of the Communist Party. This RP then will focus on the members of the Communist Party as well as the actions of the nations and their rulers. For example (the nation is undetailed in this example, so do make it more detailed than this): Nation: Great Scourge Great Scourge is a regarchy, the industrial revolution is in full swing, and it represses communism. Character: Karl Marx Karl Marx is a Scourgian philosopher, socialist agitator, and founding member of the Communist Party. With his friend and fellow philosopher, Friedrich Engels, he published the Communist Manifesto. He is likely to soon have to flee to Harndar, but will he be welcomed there? Yusukistan Yusukistan is a prince-archbishopric, it is currently in medieval technology, Archbishop Malaccus Molossius is forcing the nation into socialist thinking (much to the ire of Father Ovidian Commodus). |

Harndar Harndar was swiftly a part of the Industrial Revolution. Harndar was one of the birth places of flyable airships and the economy was strong as ever after their Economic Crisis. Since the Scourgii helped in aid, they swore to protect it if anything comes up and needed their help. Harndarians politics was shown that factory workers had some rights, but still was poor. Protests and riots still can be found in Harndar. Harndarians currently suppressed Commuism or Socialism, but still welcomes all. Roland Josi Rolanda Josi was a Harndarian delegate that thinks that there needs to be a way to support the workers without killing the economy again. He would be apart of the Communist Party, but still thinking of another solution. Edited by Harndar, Nov 21 2015, 01:36 PM.

Ankshara Ankshara is in a state of economic stagnation, but smoke is still rising from the large factories building up across the country. Railroads now connect the entire country with steam locomotives running up and down them. The country has been turned to capitalism by the brute force of the newly-elected President, Juenen Hanburt. Hanburt recently instituted an executive policy in which the minimum wage of all workers was lowered to 4 Anks per hour, giving the large factory executives large sums of money to support Hanburt, his party, and his political allies by donating more money to them. This act was the main reason the economic stagnation came in as the National Reserve Bank printed more and more money, plunging the country into a hellhole of inflation. |

[Harndar, are you sure socialist economies are necessarily bad? You'll note that the Soviet Union did much better after the revolution, and that Cuba (the only country which is currently anything close to what I believe socialism is) is only bad because of the embargo. Economic freedom =/= strong economy] [Also Ankshara... had a minimum wage? Before socialism reached it? You sure?] |

Sounds interesting... Nation: The Free Republic of The Cloud Peoples - The start of 1848 sees the nation's Second Free Elections: Helena Forbek (younger sister of Eleni Forbek) and Edward Jelk being the two candidates for Prime Minister. Forbek, intending to follow the work of her sister in securing freedom and equality for the Republic, and Jelk - son of the founder of the nation's first large scale manufacturing company. By the end of the election in March, Helena Forbek becomes the Prime Minister gaining the support of many of the civil war survivors, older citizens, and the poorer citizens. As the 'named' ideas of socialism reach the borders, Forbek is keen to incorporate some of the ('stuff' - the better word has temporarily escaped me). Meanwhile, as the Industrial Revolution starts spreading across the world, and The Cloud Peoples still in the process of shaking off their monarchy-ruled past, development is slow and the nation remains a predominantly agricultural place. Hope that was on the appropriate lines (still coming up with that bit of this nation's history, so hoping this thread might help). |

Yes. Yes we did. Also, I really don't like that all these countries are having a socialist revolution at once, so I'm keeping mine until later. |
