The Senate Hall of Great Scourge has never been so full, only the Anarchists missing. The government of Aputsiag stands ready to drastically reform the economy, but it is shaky in its resolve, whereas the opposition stands firm. "My fellow Senators, Scourge stands at the brink of change long promised and unfulfilled. We say we stand committed to socialism in our country, yet waiver when faced with the prospect of making this true. No longer, I say! It is my government's wish to institute new restrictions on productive forces both large and small, and finally build a co-operative society. The forces of reaction shall not weaken our resolve. To all people of Scourge, we promise you these things: First and foremost, that all businesses not classified as 'small' or 'syndicated' shall have all managerial positions considered officially sacked until workers in these businesses can vote on new managerial positions. To ease the transition, government appointed officers will take temporary control of all such businesses until managerial positions are in place and workers have had a simple majority in favour of having the officers leaves. Failing this the transition may take no longer than two years. Like all syndicated businesses, they shall have the right to create their own charter. Second, small businesses are to turn immediately into a syndicate. All positions may stay the same but the restrictions syndicates must comply to will be applied immediately to all businesses when and if, I suppose, the referendum to institute this bill passes. Like with the 'large' businesses, it is up to the workers to determine the Syndicate Charter. Third, the dissolving of monopolies. A free market like our own cannot work with monopolies; it is this government's wish therefore that the power to dissolve monopolies, formerly effectively ceremonial, be extended to syndicates and, with some exceptions detailed in the bill, nationalized industry, and that this process begins immediately. Fourth, the right to work. It is truly disgusting that until now we have relied on the benevolence of government bureaucrats and the often exclusive-minded syndicates to employ all Scourgian citizens. No longer! From this point on, all those eligible for welfare shall also be eligible to immediate employment in one of the state-owned industries. The right to work is the right to food, the right to life. To deny our people this is to deny them their lives. Fifth, the right to own your own home. The privileges of nobility allowing them to effectively monopolize real estate is to be ended immediately. All such housing estates are to be redistributed to the people who have rented the land, and all unrented land is to be publicly seized or given to the nearest community. The communities are to become housing cooperatives and the government owned land to be used for the next point. Sixth, the right to housing. Communities are to be built on unused land seized by the government in the previously described process. No person should live with only one room to their house, and these buildings shall be made to prevent that! That is all. The vote for instituting the 'Act for Housing and Right to Democratized Workplaces' begins now." |

A man in grey watched from afar, made scarce amongst the large voices. He was good at that; observing. He watched the proposition of their society being aimed to yet another radical change, though he was calculating. He did not observe just for entertainment, and was here for his own reasons. They may be stripped of their titles in the name of Scourge, but they still had their plots. This was what the man in grey was trying to not let happen. |

The debate rages for some time. The Communists question the need to denationalize industry, while some members of the DS party seem convinced small businesses need not be syndicated. Many in the Communist and Pirate parties question the need to keep nobles at all, with one Proventoiri senator declaring nobility and chivalrous orders to be a grave insult to her. The Pacifists and many of the DS poke into the lack of provisions about international business. The opposition, however, is almost entirely opposed to the entire bill, and some Traditionalist and Conservatives push for capitalist reforms. After five hours, though, the debate abruptly ends. A noble with waist long hair rushes into the Senate, their white robes with cloth-of-gold trimming in contrast to the rich blue collared stole with gold floral designs. The noble then screams dramatically, their accent extremely different to that of the common White Scourgius. "You shall not take my lands, not while I breath!" he exclaims, before brandishing a knife. A guard knocks him out before he can stab himself, however. A few were still debating, but the sudden silence made them stop. Armel Wörner, Overseer of the Senate, takes of his white-and-gold banded stole as he stands up. His eyes betray his great shock and distress over the scene that took place before him. "Comrades... the Senate is now in recess. We will come back... tomorrow," he frailly speaks before whispering and making the sign of the cross. The noble is rushed out by paramedics before the senators leave. |

The Grey Man watches; not with disbelief like the many down below, but with fascination. It was such a brazen move by the noble to do that, and likely would hurt his fellow nobleman's cases against the Communist Party due to the extreme faux pas that he had. He tries to meet up with Armel Wörner, if possible. |

If the man in grey had followed him, he finds Wörner praying in a corner. He notices the Grey Man, then stands up, smiling awkwardly and dusting off his robes. "I imagine I'm doing it all wrong, aren't I? Catholicism, I mean. The Scourgian churches have had difficulty knowing all the ins and outs of Christianity and its sects, and we're such a small community. I myself am actually a convert... it makes me feel strange, not knowing if I'm being a proper Catholic. Sometimes I question if it truly matters, that if so long as I am faithful in Him, He shall smile upon me. Is that the wrong way to speak about Him?... I'm sorry, this must seem so odd. Why did you want to see me?" Edited by Great Scourge, Feb 10 2016, 03:42 AM.

"Though I would indulge in religious philosophy with you, I do believe that there are more pressing matters to attend to. Unless, of course, there is tea nearby. Then philosophy comes first. I either currently am an agent with Scourgian Intelligence, or have been discharged before the plot to detonate a WMR in Stahlsstein. Are you connected with anyone who knows of Megalith Agnus Dei?" |

"No need to fear for yourself, I am just curious if you know about the recent plot. I am still working on finding out what they are up to next, but the trail has ran cold. I do not accuse you of working with the conspirators of the plot, but I am fearful for their next move. Do you know anyone that I can discuss the matter with? You don't apparently have affiliation to the group trying to stop this plot." |

"I may. You shall have to follow me, then." Wörner gestures for him to follow as he begins walking down the hallways. The halls they walk through have high-arch niches with statues of various Scourgian figures of note and plaques to either side. At one such niche, Wörner stops and turns. "She shall be here soon enough." Meanwhile, Aputsiag prepares to take over the radio and television for an hour. "Let's go through this again. Now, remember, the stress is o-" "I don't care what the stress is on! Formal Scourgian sounds unnatural when I speak it - woe be me! I'll do my best to speak it, but these people voted in a minority, not a white man. If they wanted a white man to speak they should have voted for one. Now, instead, I should like to actually rehearse the speech," says Aputsiag. His aide sighs, but complies. |

SEK Radio, 2:40 PM, Scourgian Central Standard Time "Hello comrades, Jan Schmidt here as usual. That was a wonderful little composition by Emperor Georg IV of All Scourge. A little ancient, of course, but nonetheless a timeless masterpiece. Now, we have with us today Sidonia Neumann, an incredibly influential anarchist in Scourgian circles, who is responsible for the Scourgian Anarchist position that electing candidates who do nothing is a form of protest and even viable for dismantling the state. Is that correct, Sidonia?" "Yes, it is, Jan." "But that's not why you're here - you're here because we want to know why you maintain this stance even now, as Aputsiag moves to make more businesses cooperatives." "I suppose that is correct. I should begin by saying this isn't a stubborn, sticking-to-my-principles-no-matter-what decision. My principles, and the principles of those I have influenced, continue to line up with reality and rational, informed opinions on our part. We must remain self-critical. But in this case, allow me to present my argument. Obviously, the standard capitalist system with absolutely powerful bosses and so on is hierarchical and bad, and co-operatives are in the short term preferable to this. We cannot look only at the short-term, however. Aputsiag spoke once of the unsustainability of social democracy; but I believe him to be only a step above social democrats. To him, the co-op is the pinnacle of socialism and basically the best thing to ever happen; never mind that the state and nobles control housing and that market socialism will still form hierarchies through the natural tendency of capital to accumulate around individual businesses, and leave some behind. There isn't an authoritarian hierarchy in the individual workplace, and this is heavily liberating. But hierarchies remain between businesses, in homes, in the state, in Scourgian imperialism, and racism. The latter two Aputsiag opposes, but as a moderate. He wishes to push economic liberation, but also to remain within the confines of parliamentary politics. Myself? I believe this need for compromise will be the end of him. Also, beyond that- co-ops can, ironically, be an effective means of suppressing further socialist change. People feel no need to revolt when they think they have so much. Also, these co-ops are incredibly dependent on the state. A state which might go into the hands of reactionaries at any moment. I will not participate in a state, no matter how libertarian, that might become reactionary. It would legitimize the reactionaries."

Aputsiag walks, surrounded by guards, to an exquisite lectern in the Marble Plaza of Stahlsstein. The podium on which it stands is also intricately designed, though like most of the plaza it is not actually marble, but rather a mish-mash of stones and other materials made to look somewhat like marble. As the Head of the Council steps on the lapis lazuri mural on the podium, he seems to whince in disgust at the podium, as if the podium is itself responsible for its creation. He takes a stack of papers, adjusts his microphone, and begins speaking. "Comrades, thank you for hearing me out. It has been over a decade since the Scourgian Revolution. The revolutionaries promised equality, freedom, and prosperity. We have come closer to these noble goals than any other society on earth. But we have yet to reach them. To brush aside the continued imperialist activities of my party under its former leaders, which my government has thusfar succeeded in stopping, which takes place even in the classic form of invasions, annexations, and incorporation; we have hitherto only encourage an equality in the workplace, and done nothing regarding households; which, as with much of real estate, is the sole providence of nobility." His face turns red, and he becomes animated, and his voice is almost as that of someone who is crying. "Imagine this podium - this monument to the ability of one person to subjugate others to the point where starve, but still make works so that their master may declare laws; imagine this podium a thousand times over. And you get an idea of what the mansions the nobility tend to live in are like." He calms down. "Disgustingly opulent - no wonder we are seen as decadent. Now these nobility also own huge swaths of land that the do nothing with; they own households they do not occupy; they lord over others in a supposed Peoples' Republic and charge rent to allow people to live. We have tried to subvert this by wasting public land on creating new households in the past, and while this is to be continued, we must attack the root cause if we are to not waste land and money. The nobles must lose these lands, these lands must be turned into new communities, the old communities must become free, and people must have the right to own their own home. Nobles have consistently manged to mismanage their estates, being worse than even a private business at this. There is no excuse for their continued existence. Their palaces will create tourism even if their owners are no longer powerful. This extends to all nobles, kings, emperors, and the Archalia. Do not underestimate my wrath at this disgusting institution." At this point, the crowd seems somewhat shocked. "So to any who oppose me in the senate; tell your voters where you get funding. Tell them you hate their freedom, their equality, their prosperity, and their mental and physical well-being." He takes a sip from a glass of water. A news reporter breaks the utter stillness in the crowd, but is told his question will have to wait. An agent of some sort in a black robe, their faces covered by a simple mask, walks in, carrying a folder clearly marked as classified. She stops at Wörner, and converses in Scourgian for a moment with him. "Who is this?" "A Velkandi man of some sort." "Do not speak further. We cannot assume he does not know what we are saying, no?" She then begins speaking in the trade tongue. "Hello. I'm Agent Kristina, or so I am to tell you. I was expecting to meet with Wörner alone; why, I ask, are you here?" she says, her fingers tapping the folder. |
